On March 19 Ihar Mikhaleuski’s mother was visited by a KGB officer said that her son would be fined or even put into prison if he did not stop his activity. He also said that Ihar had organized a meeting with Aliaksandar Milinkevich and added that it would be better for her son not to go to Minsk on March 25.

Pavel Kurianovich, activist of the civil campaign European Belarus, was sentenced to 15 days of prison for participating in an action of solidarity with the people of Tibet.

Dzmitry Kaspiarovich received 12 days of prison for using foul language in spite of the fact that after he had been detained by road police he was accused of hooliganism.

According to Zmitser Ianenka, vice-chief editor of Tovarishch newspaper, the car with latest issues of two independent newspapers Narodnaia volia and Tovarishch was stopped by Belarusian road police on entering the country. The driver was told to go to local police department.

19.03.2008 Kastus Zhukouski punished for greeting cards

Maryna Damnenka, judge of Homel Tsentralny Borough Court, sentenced Kastus Zhukouski, member of Belarusian Christian Democrats’ Party, to 14 days of prison and a fine of 700,000 BYR. He was charged with violating the order of organizing and conducting mass actions and resisting arrest. Maryia Tulzhankova, art college student, was fined 300,000 BYR.

On March 15, Zmitser Kaspiarovich, member of the Belarusian committee for the protection of prisoners’ rights Over the Barrier, was detained by Minsk police. According to Kaspiarovich’s friend Tsimafei Dranchuk, the activist’s car was stopped by road police.

17.03.2008 Kastus Zhukouski and Maryia Tulzhankova are in prison

Two Homel opposition activists detained during a rock concert on March 14 are in prison. According to BelaPAN, Zhukouski and Tulzhankova are accused of hooliganism and are likely to be kept in prison till the trial, which is due on March 17.

The action of solidarity with Tibetan people took place in Minsk at 4.30pm today. Activists of the campaign “Jeans – for Freedom” organised it near the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China.

14.03.2008 Leader of Homel Entrepreneurs Is Expelled from Market

On 13 March a court marshal told Mikhail Vasilyeu, chairman of the council of entrepreneurs of the Prudkouski market, to vacate his place at the market by 24 March. Otherwise the entrepreneur will be expelled from the market with the use of force.

On 14 March in the center of Vitsebsk the police detained the opposition activist Barys Khamaida, who was selling newspapers at his usual place. However, as the detainee said to human rights activists, the police were looking for white-red-white flags, not for newspapers.
