In 2006 a Homel opposition activist Kanstantsin Zhukouski built a house in the center of Homel. The house was in a bad condition after a fire. He reconstructed the house and wanted to register it in 2010. The rumors that houses in Knizhnaya Street will be dismantled started circulating at about that time.

On 13 April Halina Sytsko, Judge of the Homel Savetski District Court, fined Vasil Paliakou, Chair of the Homel region organization of the United Civil Party, 875,000 rubles (about $287) for refusing to be fingerprinted by the police.

In order to prevent such acts and ensure the right of citizens to receive truthful information based on objective data, the General Procuracy warned a number of persons who engaged in the mentioned activities, including civil activist Milinkevich A.U., journalist Starykevich A. and citizen Kostka V.I.” reads the appropriate press-release of the procuracy.

According to Interfax, the Minsk City Procuracy has passed to court the criminal cases against Iryna Khalip (wife of Belarusian presidential candidate Andrei Sannikau) Siarhei Martsaleu (head of the electoral team of the presidential candidate Mikalai Statkevich), the presidential candidate Vital Rymasheuski and the head of his electoral team Pavel Seviarynets.

The Human Rights Center Viasna offers the most sincere condolence to the families of all victims of the terrorist act which took place in the Minsk metro on 11 April. We grieve together with our people that will yet have to realize what has happened and live through it. We hope and believe, that the perpetrators will be eventually punished, either by court or by God's hand.

Sviatlana Rudkouskaya, activist of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee, has lost two jobs following her involvement in the 2010 presidential election campaign. Mrs. Rudkouskaya has been reportedly dismissed from her job as head of two Hrodna house-hold cooperatives, after other persons were appointed to the posts in violation of the law.
