07.04.2010 Official Minsk whitewashes itself before UN

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus has passed to the UN Human Rights Committee the National Report on the situation of fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens within the guidelines of the Universal Periodical Review, a procedure that had been established by the UN Human Rights Council in 2006. This is the first time that such a large document is received from Belarus. The report will be heard at the session of the Human Rights Council in May.

The democratic youth organization Young Front was denied registration. The official reasons are the discrepancy of the registration documents and the legal address of the organization and the fact that many its founders have been drawn to administrative and criminal responsibility.

06.04.2010 Yauhen Yakavenka declared evader from military services and will be tried

The case on the evasion of Yauhen Yakavenka, activist of the Belarusian Christian Democracy party, from the draft, was passed to the Tsentralny district court of Homel. He learned it on 6 April from a letter of the local procuracy.

06.04.2010 Andrei Kasheuski detained again

Activist Andrei Kasheuski from Zhodzina was detained on 5April at about 7 p.m. on the Asipovichy–Minsk train.

05.04.2010 Babruisk: Taisiya Kabanchuk’s case returned to police for correction

Taisiya Kabanchuk, Chairperson of the Babruisk branch of the Belarusian Christian Democracy Party, was detained at the railway station of Babruisk on 25 March. She was heading for Minsk. The police charged her with resistance during the detention.

05.04.2010 BPF Youth leader fined for action of solidarity with political prisoners

Andrei Krechka, leader of the BPF Youth, was fined 700,000 rubles by Nadzeya Navitskaya, Judge of the Leninski district court of Minsk, for an action on Kastrychnitskaya Square on the Solidarity Day, 16 March.

02.04.2010 New criminal case for graffiti

Young Front activist Ruslan Matveyeu was questioned in connection with a criminal case related to an inscription 'Long live Belarus!' on the building of the Pershamaiski district court in Minsk.

30.03.2010 Supreme Court turns down claim by Young Belarus

The Supreme Court dismissed the claim lodged by the 'Young Belarus' movement and upheld the decision by the Ministry of Justice, who earlier refused registration to the organization, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports. The youth movement headed by activist Zmitser Kaspiarovich is officially registered in Lithuania. Lacking Belarusian registration, its members nay be prosecuted under Article 193-1 of the Criminal Code for illegal membership.

29.03.2010 UN HR Committee registers complaint by Brest activist

The UN Human Rights Committee registered an individual complaint by Brest Belarusian Popular Front activist Siarhei Lazenka, the BelaPAN news agency reports, quoting local human rights defender Raman Kisliak.

29.03.2010 500-dollar fine for demand to release Autukhovich

The court sentenced Andrei Kuzminski, a Young Belarus activist, to a 40-basic unit fine.

As Radio Svaboda reminds, youth activist Andrei Kuzminski was detained in the morning March 29. Then the oppositionist was taken to the court.

13 Babruisk members of the Belarusian Christian Democracy party were refused registration as candidates due to various reasons, e.g. Viachaslau Sheleh’s application was turned down after the election commission declared 3 signatures collected by his campaign team fake.

26.03.2010 Homel BCD coordinator refused registration

Kastus Zhukosuki, Homel regional coordinator of the creation of the Belarusian Christian Democracy Party was not granted registration as a candidate for the city council, but was allowed to run for the Homel Regional Council.
