03.09.2009 Distributors of Communist newspaper detained in Svetlahorsk

Today at 8 a.m. policemen and KGB men detained activists of the Communist party of Belarus Svyatlana Mikhalchanka and Valery Rybchanka.

Communists of Svetlahorsk were handing out leaflets and Tovarishch newspaper near the Khimvolokno enterprise, Radio Svaboda informs.

“We were taken to a police department,” Valery Rybchanka said. “And we were not told what we had violated. Now we are waiting for a police officer. No one from the policemen knows what to do with us”.

02.09.2009 More detentions in Brest

The 9 activists of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada) detained for participating in a memorial action marking the 70th anniversary of WWII on 1 September in Brest have been released without charge, the BelaPAN news agency reports. ‘I am deeply ashamed that this country which has suffered from the WWII so much keeps harassing activists who revere the memory of its victims,’ says one of the detainees Hanna Kanius. She also said that similar actions were held on 1 September across Brest Region.

02.09.2009 Brest activist arrested for distributing HR newsletter

On 30 August Brest police detained activist Ivan Stasiuk as he was distributing copies of the ‘Human Rights’ newsletter. The newsletters were later seized after the activist had been taken to Brest Maskouski police department. As a result, he was warned that the newsletters would be submitted for an expert examination and released without charge. The action marking the International Day of the Disappeared was organized by the Young Front youth organization.

17.08.2009 Russian journalists arrested and deported from Belarus

An NTV film crew was shooting a film in Minsk about the disappeared politicians.

Aleksey Malkov and Yury Babenko were detained on August 14 in the hotel of the International Education Center (IBB) where they had stayed.

As the website www.charter97.org learnt that officers of secret services in mufti got the journalists out of the room at 7:00 p.m. The people signed Malkov and Babenko out. According to the preliminary information, the journalists were guarded to the Maskouski district militia department.

30.07.2009 Oppositionist detained for action of solidarity with political prisoner Dubski

“Young Front” activists from Lida town pasted information posters “Freedom to Dubski” on Wednesday.

Two people in mufti and militiamen came up to “Young Front” activist Vadzim Barouski in the evening July 29 near the town park, where the activist was spreading information about the political prisoner. The guy was guarded to the district militia department. The youth activist gave explanations there and was freed an hour later,” the website mfront.net reports.

Dozens of portraits of arrested participant of the Process of 14 Artsyom Dubski appeared in the streets.

28.07.2009 Mass arrests on Independence Day in Minsk

Riot militiamen arrested more than 20 activists of the civil campaign “European Belarus” who wanted to celebrate the 19th anniversary of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Belarus in the centre of Minsk.

On July 27 at 7 p.m. in Yanka Kupala park activists of the civil campaign “European Belarus” planned to hold a flash mob dedicated to the Independence Day of Belarus. Each one of the young people took out a copy of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Belarus and started to read it.

On July 27 in Lida near the railway station policemen detained Vadzim Barouski and Kastus Litvinski.

Young activists were pasting informational leaflets about the political prisoner Artsyom Dubski.

Policemen took “Young Front” activists to the regional police department.

“In the regional police department policemen didn’t know what article to pin on us, so they put the Criminal Code on the table and said: you can choose one yourselves,” Vadzim Barouski said in an interview to the website mfront.net.

27.07.2009 Arrests for national flags started in regions

In the town of Haradok, Vitsebsk region, young oppositionists planned to celebrate the Independence Day on July 27 by a rally under a white-red-white flag.

15 young activists gathered on the central square of the town with national flags and scanned slogans: “Long live Belarus!” As a result, policemen detained activists of “European Belarus” Iryna Pyatrova and Leanid Autukhou, and “Moladz BNF” activists Valery Ramanenka and Taras Surhan.

A report was drawn up against the detained on charges relating article 23.34 of Administrative Code – “Participation in unsanctioned events”. It is known that the court is to take place today.

20.07.2009 Over 60 activists detained on Solidarity Day

According to RFERL, over 60 persons were arrested on Solidarity Day across the country. The arrests were neither recorded nor reached the court. Artur Finkevich, leader of the Young Belarus movement, was beaten by the police in Kastrychnitskaya square in Minsk. All the detainees were finally released.

20.07.2009 6 oppositionists arrested in Zhodzina

On 17 July Zhodzina police detained 6 United Civil Party activists – Uladzimir Kazak, Aliaksandr Serhiyenka, Siarhei Kluyeu, Aliaksandr Stsepanenka, Raman and Aliaksei Bahdanovichs – as they were distributing newspapers and leaflets at the BelaAZ automobile plant entrance. According to the UCPB leader Anatol Liabedzka, the newspapers covered a series of anti-recessionary policy measures proposed by representatives of the opposition movement of Belarus.

The director of Vaukavysk firm Nika-Taxi 22222 Liudmila Paremskaya was detained by the police and special purpose squad Almaz from Minsk. The office of the firm was searched and documents were seized.

02.07.2009 Arrests of oppositionists at fest in Budslau

Paval Sevyarynets, co-chairman of the Belarusian Christian Democracy (BCD), and other opposition activists are among the detained.

On July 2, a fest of worship of icon of Our Lady of Budslau, patroness of Belarus, takes place in Budslau (the Myadzel district, the Minsk region). A reason for the detention of Paval Sevyarynets and three BCD activists was the fact that the young people had some dozens of BCD bulletin “Krynitsa” on them.
