01.07.2013 Statement by the Human Rights Center "Viasna" and the Belarusian Helsinki Committee on sentencing of Andrei Haidukou

On July 1, 2013, Andrei Haidukou was convicted under paragraph 1, Article 14 and Article 356-1 of the Criminal Code (attempt to establish cooperation with the special service, security or intelligence services of a foreign state) and sentenced to 1.5 years in prison.

Judge Halina Urbanovich of Vitsebsk Regional Court sentenced today Andrei Haidukou, leader of an unregistered NGO “Union of Young Intellectuals”, to 18 months in a general security penal colony, after he was found guilty of an “attempted crime” under Art. 356.1 of the Criminal Code (“establishment of cooperation with the security services of a foreign state”).

However, it seems that it is the activist himself who may face criminal charges: such a proposal to the head of the Investigative Committee of Vitsebsk region, Uladzimir Shalukhina, was made by the Chairman of Pershamaiski District Court of Vitsebsk Andrushchanka.

13.06.2013 Pavel Levinau demands change of restraint for Haidukou

Vitsebsk human rights activist addressed such a request to a judge of the Vitsensk Regional Court Halina Urbanovich, who leads the trial on the "espionage case". Pavel Levinau also filed a complaint to the Investigative Committee and applied to the head of the Vitsebsk Regional Court Miakali Khamichonak concerning the noticed violations.
