The Supreme Court of Belarus considered today an appeal of Aliaksandr Hrunou, resident of Hrodna sentenced to death over the brutal murder of a student. The final verdict will be pronounced on October 22.

In 1997, with the accession to the Council of Europe, Georgia abolished the death penalty. 42 death convicts were pardoned, with the replacement of the death sentence first with 20 and then by 15 years of imprisonment.

The 11th World Day against the Death Penalty is marked on October 10, 2013. It was founded by the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty – a group of legal associations, trade unions, local and regional authorities, as well as human rights organizations – for the purpose of the abolition of this kind of punishment.
