06.04.2009 Kobryn: youth activist gets detained for white-red-white flag

In Kobryn the police detained the local activist of Young Front Andre Vieramiuk for hanging out a white-red-white flag. At 6 p.m. on Saturday they hanged out the flag at 12-meter height on one of the buildings in the center of the city. When they wanted to go away from the place, the riot squad policemen approached them and said that some citizens complained about the white-red-white flag.

03.04.2009 Kazulin, Liabedzka and Viachorka were detained on the border

Belarusian oppositionists Anatol Liabedzka, Alexander Kazulin, and Vintsuk Viachorka were detained at the Lithuanian-Belarusian border in the morning on 3 April.

16.03.2009 Detention in Vitsebsk

On 15 March Vitsebsk police detained youth activist Kastus Ivanou as he was distributing leaflets in the town center. The action marking the Constitution Day was to draw public attention to the provisions of the Fundamental Law, which guarantee the right to receive true information, the right to freedom of assembly and free expression of political convictions. The leaflets featured a number of facts of abuse of the above-mentioned rights in Belarus, in Vitsebsk, in particular.

17.02.2009 Local BPF office leader detained in Vitsebsk

On 16 February Vitsebsk police detained Kanstantsin Smolikau, head of BPF’s Vitsebsk Regional office, for distributing leaflets covering the events of 8 February when three Belarusian independent trade union members were arrested in the town of Vaukavysk. A few hours later the BPF leader was released. According to Mr.Smolikau, he is going to appeal the actions of the police.

On 5 January officers of Partyzanski district police department of Minsk detained more than 80 representatives of Gypsy minority in the Suburb of Stsiapianka and took fingerprints from them.

05.02.2009 Minsk: police burst into apartment to arrest ‘European Belarus’ activists

On 5 February the police burst into the apartment hired by the activist of the civil campaign European Belarus Pavel Yukhnevich, searched it and confiscated equipment and EU flags.

04.02.2009 Vitsebsk: police detain Barys Khamaida for handing out leaflets

On 4 February officers of Chyhunachny district police department of Vitsebsk detained the well-known opposition activist Barys Khamaida for handing out leaflets with the national emblem Pahonia. The matter is that the authorities of Vitsebsk oblast propose to make Pahonia the official emblem of Vitsebsk oblast, but take as sample the emblem of Vitsebsk oblast in the times of the Russian Empire.

Alexander Barazenka, activist of the civil campaign Europena Belarus and a figurant of the ‘process of 14’, has been detained today in the center of Minsk.

27.01.2009 European Belarus activist Yauhen Afnahel arrested in Minsk

Activist of the civil campaign “European Belarus” Yauhen Afnahel has been detained in the center of Minsk.

According to witnesses, at 5.00 p.m., 5 or 6 officers of riot militia came up to the oppositionist on Victory square and asked to show his ID. However, they didn’t wait for him to perform their demand, pulled the activist into a car, and took him in an unknown direction.

The press service of “European Belarus” managed to phone the youth leader. Afnahel said he was in the Partyzanski district militia department of Minsk. He wasn’t said why he had been detained.

17.01.2009 Solidarity Day: Finkevich and Kastylenka detained

On 16 January, shortly after the end of a solidarity action plainclothes riot police officers detained leader of the Young Belarus movement Artur Finkevich and a YB activist Siarhei Kastylenka. The activists were distributing leaflets containing a list of kidnapped Belarusian journalists and politicians.

12.01.2009 Salihorsk: police detain trade union activist

On 12 December in Salihorsk the police detained an activist of the independent trade union of radio-electronic industry (ITUREI) Mikalai Pakhabau.
