Death convict Siarhei Ivanou has been executed, according to another death convict Siarhei Khmialeuski, who reportedly shared a cell with Ivanou on death row in jail No. 1 in Minsk.
Siarhei Ivanou must have been executed on the night of May 18, Siarhei Khmialeuski said during today’s hearing of his appeal to the Supreme Court.
According to Andrei Paluda, coordinator of the campaign "Human Rights Defenders against the Death Penalty in Belarus”, Siarhei Ivanou’s relatives have confirmed his death. They were notified about the execution last week. In the near future, they are expected to pick up a death certificate, but his personal belongings have not yet been returned, says the human rights activist.
In March 2015, Siarhei Ivanou was found guilty of the brutal murder of his partner and sentenced to death.
