Criminal Case Against Mikhalevich Suspended
However, the case can be reopened any time.
Former presidential candidate Ales Mikhalevich. posted about the suspension of the criminal proceedings against him on Facebook.
“They suspended the criminal case against me. The criminal proceedings were not ceased, but suspended. This automatically lifts the travel ban, but I am still in the status of the accused. The investigation is not carried out, but it can be resumed at any time”, - Mikhalevich said.
Ales Mikhalevich, as well as other presidential candidates and members of their headquarters, was arrested on December 20, 2010 on charges of organizing “mass disorders”. He was released from the KGB detention center on his own recognizance on February 19, 2011, and on February 28, he held a press conference, where he told about tortures that took place in the detention center.
In March 2011, Mikhalevich secretly left Belarus, grounding that decision by the threat of “physical altercation”. He was granted the political asylum in the Czech Republic a few weeks later.
The ex-presidential candidate returned to Belarus in September 2015.
