According to the Belarusian State
Statistic Service, 628 people were kept in cell-type prison
facilities in Belarus at the end of 2012, the smallest number in the
recent years.
232 of them are serving prison terms for murder
or attempted murder or murderous assault, 73 – for robbery, 52 –
for thefts, 53 more – for drug-related crimes. Almost 29,000 people
were kept in penitentiary institutions, which also the smallest
number.
23,000 of them were kept in penitentiaries, 5,000 –
in remand prisons, 240 people – in penitentiaries for
minors.
According to the statistics, only 1,129 of the
prisoners were diagnosed with drug addiction, which is quite strange,
as at the end 2011 the number was twice higher.
