Belarus holds second place in Europe in the number of prisoners
As stated in an appropriate report of
the Council of Europe, almost a half of European prisons are
overcrowded. The greatest percentage of arrested was registered in
Russia, then come Belarus, Georgia and Azerbaijan.
According
to the expert assessments, according to the results of 2011 there
were more prisoners than places in prisons in 20 out of 47 countries
of the Council of Europe, reports the Russian BBC service.
The
first place is occupied by Serbia, having almost 151 prisoners per
100 places, the second – by Italy(147/100). Penitentiaries are also
overcrowded in France, Belgium and Hungary.
According the CE
statistics, in 2011 Europe had the average of 154 prisoners per
100,000 citizens. The lowest percentage of prisoners was in Island
and the greatest – in Russia.
According to the International
Center for Penitentiary Studies, which drew statistics for 2013,
Russia has 487 prisoners per 100,000. The second place is held by
Belarus (438 prisoners), followed by Georgia and
Azerbaijan.
According to the Council of Europe, almost 95%
prisoners are men, whose average age is 33 years.
The
greatest number of foreign convicts is registered in Western Europe
(about 30%), whereas in Eastern Europe they comprise just about 2%.
