Private house of human rights defender Uladzimir Malei robbed by unidentified people
On 9 April 2013, the private house
of human rights defender Uladzimir Malei in Mazyr, where he has been
living since the death of his mother, was robbed. The thieves broke
in through a window.
They stole an electric plane and a set
consisting of an electric drill, polishing machine and an electric
fret-saw. They also took the order "Chernobyl Cross: Courage.
Dignity. Humanity", awarded to the human rights defender by the
all-Ukrainian Union Chernobyl of the Ukraine in 2011 on the occasion
of the 25th anniversary of the accident at Chernobyl Nuclear Power
Plant. In 1986 Mr. Tseliapun took part in the liquidation of the
consequences of this man-caused accident.
"These days I
have been in Homel, taking part in a meeting of activists of the
campaign "For Fair Elections". My son phoned me at about 2
p.m. and told me about the broken window and the theft of the tools.
It seems that his visit to the house hindered the thieves to steal
anything else," stated Mr. Tseliapun. "Of course, the very
fact is unpleasant. But the most disappointing thing is the
disappearance of the "Chernobyl Cross" on the eve of 26
April, another anniversary of the national mourning in connection
with the NPP accident," commented Uladzimir Tseliapun.
He
also stated that similar thefts had taken place in the neighboring
houses and said that he didn't believe the Belarusian security
services were involved in this crime.
