The review appeal against the death verdict to Uladzislau Kavaliou remains unconsidered by the head of the Supreme Court
The counsel Stanislau
Abrazei who defended Uladzislau Kavaliou, sentenced to death for the
alleged involvement in terrorism, addressed the head of the Supreme
Court with the demand to urgently consider the review appeal against
the death verdict. According to the law, it was to have been done
back in October 2012.
However, the lawyer hasn't received any
answer so far. Liubou Kavaliova considers the situation with the
review appeal as one of the numerous violations of the law by duty
officials:
"The review appeal was filed by the counsel
Stanislau Abrazei on 27 September 2012. They were to have answered
within a month, as far as the court didn't request the case for
additional study. No answer has been given to the lawyer. I don't
believe that my son is guilty, consider the court verdict as unfair
and the execution – as groundless. However, I can't do anything to
improve the situation: the powers of attorney, according to which I
was given the right to present the son's interests, thrice
disappeared in the KGB. I think that it was not an accident: it was
done to limit my efforts in the struggle first for my son's life, and
then – for his good name. By the way, these documents are not the
only things missing at the KGB. There are also Uladzislau's notes
kept by him during the trial. I didn't manage to find out where are
these papers, who destroyed or appropriated them with unknown aims,"
commented the woman.
On 30 November 2011 the Supreme Court of
Belarus issued the death verdict to Dzmitry Kanavalau and Uladzislau
Kavaliou who were declared guilty of committing an explosion on the
metro station "Kastrychnitskaya" on 11 April 2011.
Kanavalau and Kavaliou were executed by shooting in March
2012.
