Ales Bialiatski: "This international support is a message to all Belarusians"
The fact that the
political prisoner remains in Babruisk-based penal colony is confirmed by the letters
he continues sending – of 18th, 20th, 24th December. Ales
says that almost all of his free time is occupied by letters. Letters
and postcards with words of support coming in large numbers – sometimes more
than a hundred of them comes in just a day.
"Such
international support confuses me, (on December 21 he received a record number
of cards and letters – one hundred and five) I think that I do not deserve it. The
only excuse that reassures me is that these people do not just support me personally,
but express their protest against the systematic violation of human rights. It is a clear and simple
message to all Belarusians," says Ales Bialiatski.
The
majority of the letters of solidarity are sent to Ales Bialiatski as part of Amnesty
International’s Global Marathon
and local campaigns by the organization’s groups from different countries –
Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Sweden,
Switzerland, Germany, Finland, Canada, Japan and others.
