Fair World member appeals 3-year suspended sentence
Yauhen Basareuski, member of the Fair World United Party of the Left, who was sentenced to a three-year suspended prison term on December 7, is appealing the verdict at Homel Regional Court.
“Me and my lawyer have studied the ruling of Zhlobin District Court. We ran across certain irregularities at once. They deal with the substantiation of the verdict. Other materials, put it mildly, shocked us. In particular, the ruling argues that our enterprise could not but pay taxes for the money we could have earned. Meanwhile, it finds the inspection carried out by the State Control Committee as legal. However, it says nothing of an expert decision by the Ministry of Justice that recognized the inspection illegitimate,” says Yauhen Basareuski.
The activist says he has little hope for a positive outcome of the hearing.
Yauhen Basareuski was convicted on charges of "abuse of power or of a position of authority."
