Uruccha protesters threatened with arrest
On 14 March dwellers of houses in Rusiyanau Street (Uruccha suburb of Minsk) against went out
of their houses to protest against the construction of a 19-stored house for
riot policemen.
Workers wanted to fence off the construction site, but some cars were parked
there. The builders stated they would call an evacuator.
The head of the Pershamaiski District Construction Bureau of Minsk came to the
place and brought the documents concerning the building. He told the protesters
that everything was done lawfully, but they refused to disperse. Soon there
came a police mini-wan. The people were threatened with 15-days of arrest and
had to return to their houses. However, they intend to gather again in the
evening and discuss the situation.
Bear in mind that the conflict between the dwellers of the houses and the
administration of the Pershamaiski District Court of Minsk started in 2005 in connection with the
plans to build a 19-stored house for riot policemen in a yard with little
space. They also intend to build another house – right on children’s
playground.
