Vitsebsk opposition activist Siarhei Kavalenka, who is currently facing criminal charges for alleged violation of parole restrictions, submitted a complaint to the UN Human Rights Committee shortly before his arrest on 19 December 2011, www.vitebskspring.org reports.
In his complaint, the imprisoned activist demands to order the Belarusian authorities to reverse the verdict imposed to him for displaying a white-red-white flag in central Vitsebsk in January 2010.
Siarhei Kavalenka argues that the suspended three-year sentence handed down for the offence is illegal. He also believes that the fine meant to cover the reported damage to the city police and housing department was disproportionate.
