Vitsebsk: political prisoner Siarhei Kavalenka fined 140,000 rubles
The Pershamaiski District Court of Vitsebsk finished the
proceedings on an administrative case against political prisoner Siarhei Kavalenka.
Judge Volha Ivanova fined him for alleged swearing at officers of the penal
inspection.
The trial lasted for more than a month. Kavalenka’s lawyer asked the court to
drop the charges against him because of the absence of evidence and
discrepancies in the testimonies of the accusation’s witnesses.
Kavalenka is kept in a pre-trial prison within the framework of a criminal case
instigated against him under Article 415 of the Criminal Code for alleged
violation of the regime of the personal restraint to which he had been
sentenced for hanging out a white-red-white flag atop the main New Year Tree of
Vitsebsk on 7 January 2010.
The activist has been hungering for 25 days already to protest against the
intention of the authorities to imprison him for wire-drawn reasons.
