Mahiliou: correspondence with authorities instead of People's Assembly
The
organizing committee to hold the People’s Assembly in Mahiliou sent a letter to
the chairman of the Mahilou District Executive Committee. The organizing
committee demanded the official to account for “gross mistakes and blunders in
social and economic development of the country”.
Bear in mind that organizers of the People Assembly in Mahiliou decided not to
hold the gathering again amid increasing repression, but to send a letter to
the chairman of the Mahiliou District Executive Committee demanding to answer
the questions on social and economic situation raised on 8 October.
Representatives
of the authorities did not appear at the local gathering, the letter reads.
“Instead of answering the acute questions, look into eyes of deceived people,
the authorities chose the tried-and-true method they have been using for 17
years – they hide behind police, prosecutor’s offices and courts,” the letter
says.
The organizing committee says the authorities tried to scare participants of
the gathering. The head of the gathering, Uladzimir Shantsau, sent decisions of
the People’s Assembly to the local authorities, but have not received any
answers.
“We consider it necessary to remind you about the necessity to account to
dwellers of Ramanau and Muanzhynski Streets for the gross mistakes and blunders
in the social and economic development of the country,” the letter says.
The organizing committee of the People’s Assembly asks to inform about time and
place of the meetings.
As Uladzimir Shantsau told BelaPAN, correspondence with the authorities is in fact the only way to talk to them. “We are deprived of other legal ways of influence on the authorities,” the oppositionist says.
