Bialiatski's lawyer files appeal against court verdict
On 29 November lawyer Dzmitry Layeuski filed an appeal
against the verdict of the Pershamaiski District Court of Minsk to human rights
defender Ales Bialiatski with the Minsk City Court.
In his last plea Ales Bialiatski, Chairman of the Human Rights Center “Viasna”,
emphasized his innocence and expressed a firm conviction that his case “was
politically motivated from the beginning to the end”.
Bear in mind that on 24 November Judge Siarhei Bandarenka sentenced the
vice-President of the International Federation for Human Rights, Chairman of
the Human Rights Center
“Viasna” Ales Bialiatski to 4.5 years in a high-security prison with
confiscation of assets for a large-scale tax evasioin. Bialiatski was also
sentenced to pay 721 mln rubles to the state in damages and 36 mln rubles for
court expenditures.
