Babruisk authorities prohibit signing for construction of school and hospital
Activists of the civil campaign “Tell the Truth!” are
collecting signatures for the construction of a new school in the Zakhodni
suburb, the reconstruction of the road on Krylou Street and concerning problems
in the polyclinics in Farshtat suburb in Babruisk.
An officer of the open joint stock company “Belshyna” who asked to remain
anonymous said to human rights defenders that they had been told about the collection
of signatures at their work. The workers were warned against putting their
signatures, as the signature sheets would be thoroughly checked and the signers
would be punished.
Alena Miadzvedeva, Babruisk coordinator of “Tell the Truth!”, knows about it. “Yes,
the local dwellers told me about the prohibition to put their signatures. I
also received a telephone call from the local TV, who wanted me to comment on
the collection of signatures. However, I refused as I knew that they would distort
my words. They still broadcast a report, in which we were denigrated.
Fortunately, it has little impact on our activity – the people know their local
problems well enough and readily put their signatures. For instance, we have
already collected the necessary number of signatures for the construction of a
new hospital,” commented the activist.
