UN Committee admits violation in Brest activist’s case
The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) has admitted the violations made against civil activist Inha Abramava at a detention center in Brest.
Mrs. Inha Abramava argued that the actions by the prison’s employees were offensive and constituted sexual harassment.
“This is the first complaint against Belarus registered and considered at the Committee, which called upon the Belarusian authorities to cover Mrs. Abramava’s moral sufferings and eliminate all the negative features in detention centers for women”, says human rights defender Raman Kisliak.
Inha Abramava was detained by Brest police back in 2007 and sentenced to 5 days arrest. After the release, she tried to appeal the inhuman detention conditions in a number of Belarusian courts.
