FID sent identical refusals to salihorskers’ personal guarantees for Bialiatski
The civil activists of Salihorsk who had signed their personal
guarantees for the imprisoned human rights defender Ales Bialiatski several
weeks ago, found identical answers in their postboxes. Even their names and
surnames weren’t printed there.
Among the Salihorsk residents who sent such letters there is the family of
Shylas, the local human rights defenders Leanid Markhotka and Aliaksei
Valabuyeu, Young Front activists and
many others.
“Only the numbers of the answers are different. They don’t even contain the
surnames of the persons who asked to release Mr. Bialiatski under their
personal guarantee. The motivational
part of this decision is limited to the peremptory "there are no reasons
to change the chosen restraint,” says Leanid Markhotka. “However, our letters
of guarantee are such a reason, and investigator Kasynkina was to have
explained why Ales Bialiatski cannot be released from jail under the personal
guarantte of a certain person”.
Bear in mind that Ales Bialiatski, Chair of the Human Rights Center Viasna and vice-President of the
International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) was detained at about 5 p.m. near
Peramoha Square.
The same day searches were conducted at his apartment, summer residence and the
office of the HRC Viasna, after which
he was taken for an interrogation to the Financial Investigations Department of
the State Control Committee. After the interrogation, Mr. Bialiatski was
arrested. On 12 August he received charges in the concealment of profits on an
especially large scale.
