The investigation in the case of “19 December mass riot” against Anatol Liabedzka was resumed on 1 August 2011. The politician called this decision “a political one, not a legal one”, ucpb.org informs.

The head of the preliminary investigation department Mr.Kazakevich has informed the leader of the United Civil Party about resuming the case investigation. He is to be informed about the procedural decision additionally.

The police officer also responded to the fact that the politician had not been given back his passport and personal things. “I inform you again that the copy of your address concerning return of the passport and personal things as of 10 June 2011 was forwarded to the KGB of Belarus,” Kazakevich writes.

“Unfortunately, the motives and reasons of the investigation resuming are not clear from the answer of Kazakevich. It gives reasons to think that the reasons are political.” The politician says that the security agencies are getting ready for autumn and are making it clear that they are ready to try political opponents again and open cases against new persons. According to Liabedzka, the authorities have made him a termless political hostage.

Liabedzka cannot get new driver’s license and even receive letters without his passport, and the KGB and police seem to enjoy that. “That’s the level of intellectual development of our special services,” Liabedzka said.

The politician said all the legal opportunities in solving this problem have been exhausted. He is not going to write any documents and there is no point to address law-enforcing agencies in his case.

During the presidential election of 2010 Anatol Liabedzka worked in the team of his deputy party leader Yaraslau Ramanchuk, a candidate from the United Civil Party. After the protest rally on December 19 he was arrested at home by state security agencies. He was charged with staging mass unrest. Amnesty International recognized him prisoner of conscience. His wife and son were waiting for him at home. Late at night on 6 March 2011 he was released on recognizance.
