Legal Transformation Center releases statement ahead of International Day in Support of Victims of Torture

The Legal Transformation Center has released a statement “In support of actions combating torture and other Cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment” to be submitted to a number of state bodies of Belarus, including the Houses of Parliament, the Constitutional and the Supreme Courts, the Ministries of Defense and Interior Affairs.   

The document emphasizes the significance of the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment as a universal human rights instrument ratified by Belarus. It calls upon the Belarusian authorities to bring the current interrogation procedures and detention conditions in line with the Convention. It also demands facilitation of prompt and unbiased investigations into torture reports.

The statement marks the UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on 26 June.
