On 24 March, Vitsebsk city police detained local opposition activist Siarhei Kavalenka for staging an unauthorized picket in the central Lenin Street.
Another local pro-democratic activist, member of the Young Belarus movement, Ales Halavan was detained on 23 March. Young Belarus local leaders believe the activist’s detention is linked to the forthcoming 25 March Freedom Day celebrations.
