A number of Vitsebsk civil activists have been refused to carry out an inspection of detention conditions at the KGB Minsk pre-trial prison, after their appeal to the Prosecutor General of Belarus was redirected to Minsk City Prosecutor’s Office.
Apart from that, the activists demanded to initiate an investigation of alleged torture incidents reported by the KGB prisoners.
“We received a reply saying that our appeal had been redirected to Minsk City Prosecutor’s Office, which would reportedly tackle the matter in future. However, the reply fails to mention the KGB prison facts”, says Kastus Smolikau, chair of the Belarusian Popular Front Vitsebsk regional office.
