International pressure on Belarusian authorities increases
Today, on 4 March, Vice-President of the International Federation for
Human Rights (FIDH), Chair of the Human Rights Center Viasna Ales Bialiatski is present at the session of the UN Human
Rights Council in Geneva.
In the morning he had a working breakfast with representatives of such
international human rights organizations as Human Rights Watch, Civicus, FIDH,
Human Rights House Foundation and representatives of the national delegations
of the state parties of the Council. The topic of the meeting was discussion of
the situation of human rights in Belarus. It was emphasized that the
things that were happening in the Near East mustn’t push into the background the
tragic development of the events in Belarus, the authoritative regime of each
completely ignore human rights and have declared a factual war to the civil
society.
After the presentation of the situation, the possible actions of the Council concerning
the adoption of a special resolution on Belarus were discussed.
At 2 p.m. the parallel event Situation of
Human Rights in Belarus started at the UN Palace of Nations. Ales
Bialiatski takes floor there and experts of Human Rights Watch present their
report Post-election Pressurization in
Belarus.
