Niakliayeu in prison

Uladzimir Niakliayeu, leader of the ‘Havary Praudu’ civil campaign, has officially been declared suspect in the case initiated under Par. 1 Art. 250 of the Criminal Code – ‘willful spreading of knowingly false information or application of advertising misleading the consumer about the quality, quantity, composition, method of fabrication or other characteristics of the products (commodities, work, services).’

The activist was taken into custody at Detention Center in Akrestsin Street.

According to Viasna’s human rights activist Valiantsin Stefanovich, detention can only be applied to suspects or accused of crimes, providing for over two years of imprisonment. However, Par. 1 of Art. 250 of the CC provides for up to 2 years of imprisonment. Therefore, the investigators cannot detain Mr Niakliayeu for over 72 hours.
