Officers of the Chynunachy district police department in Vitsebsk gave such charges to Barys Khamaida for ‘hanging out a white-red-white flag’.
In fact, a young man asked Mr. Khamaida to keep the watch while he was hanging the flag on a power line. The latter agreed, as he considers it not a violation, but a manifestation of national conscience.
Barys Khamaida refused to sign the police report. The policemen told him he would be summoned to the court as an ‘accomplice’ in a crime under Article 17.1 envisaging a fine or up to 15 days of arrest.
