The monument to ghetto prisoners in Brest center at intersection of Dziarzhynsk and Kuibyshau Streets was desecrated in the night of 9-10 May.
‘Vandals burned all wreaths and flowers at the monument; the monument is sooty, covered with something like tar’, the head of the Brest Jewish community Barys Bruk told BelaPAN.
Mr. Bruk learnt about the accident from activists of the community on 10 May and informed the city executive committee, the police and the information and culture center of the Israeli Embassy in Belarus the about this.
‘Law enforcement officers have been working at the site today. They said a criminal case would be instigated on this fact, said Barys Bruk. ‘Only those, who can’t be called people, are able to commit this unprecedented act of vandalism while we are marking an anniversary of the victory over German Nazi troops. This monument was erected in memory of 34 000 Brest dwellers, slaughtered by the Nazis for being Jews. Insulting their memory is another killing of them.’
