Mahiliou Authorities Receive About 40 Applications for Pickets against Repeal of Benefits
Recently about 40 applications for authorization of social pickets have been sent to the authorities. These applications were filed on behalf of private individuals, not political parties or NGOs.
A member of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party Hramada Viktar Karakouski said that he filed an application because he wanted to hold a picket with the aim to draw the citizens of Mahiliou to the repeal of social benefits since 1 January 2008.
Another BSDP member, Uladzimir Yurchenka applied for authorization of a picket near Mahiliou city executive committee with the aim to draw the attention of the authorities to the hard financial situation of the people whom they were going to deprive of the social benefits. ‘I think that social benefits for veterans of the Afghan war, pensioners, students and schoolchildren should be preserved’, - said Yurchanka.
According to Aliaksandr Karaliou, the legal adviser of the independent trade union of radio-electronic industry, the 13 applicants who belong to this trade union specified eight places in the center of the city for holding their pickets. In the case of refusal the citizens intend to sue to the district courts of Mahiliou.
