European Parliament Stands for Hrodna’ Center
Some time ago Aliaksandr Milinkevich directed to the heads of the EU countries, deputies of the European Parliament, UNESCO and a number of other international organization on protection of cultural heritage a request to prevent the destruction of the architectural and archaeological heritage of Hrodna. Following this, the Committee on Culture and Education of the European Parliament has applied to UNESCO with the request to defend the historical part of the city center and establish for it an international commission for monitoring of the restoration works.
A committee representative Tadeusz Zwefko also prepared a special statement to condemn the present program of restoration of architectural monuments in Hrodna and address to the city authorities to stop such actions.
The chair of the Commission on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament Yacek Mariusz-Wolski said to the leader of For Freedom movement Aliaksandr Milinkevich: ‘The centuries-old historical heritage of Hrodna is a common problem not only for Belarusians, but also Poles, Lithuanians and all Europeans and I hope that the steps we start taking will help in stopping the purposeful destruction of the ancient center of Hrodna.’
