European Commission’s Representation to Open in Minsk

Belarus has agreed for opening a representation office of the European Commission in Minsk. BelaPAN learned that from the office of Benita Ferrero-Waldner, European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy.

“We have received a decision of Belarusian foreign ministry concerning our request in 2005,” told the press-secretary of the office Christine Hohmann. “Belarusian authorities have made a favorable decision on opening a representation in Minsk”.

Christine Hohmann says, the next step would be discussion of the agreement between Minsk and Brussels about the conditions of opening the representation.

We have reported earlier, at present moment a representation office of the European Commission in Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus is located in Kyiv. It is headed by Ambassador Ian Boag.

According to European officials, a representation in Minsk is necessary for effective cooperation and coordination of work with the diplomatic missions existing in the country.
