Katsiaryna Sadouskaya wrote in her last letter home about the possibility of her release on probation. Katsiaryna informed her husband that Commission of Homel women’s prison recommended her for a probation release. Narodnaya Volia writes, she may be released already in April.

On April 23rd Leninski district court of Minsk sentenced Katsiaryna sadouskaya, 60, to 2 years of jail. The ground for criminal charges was an unsent letter found during the search in her apartment. In the letter Sadouskaya accused the head of the state of committing crimes and called him a “monster”. Linguistic expert commission decided the word is a comparison with an animal and is insulting to a person.

According to the court decision, Katsiaryna Sadouskaya is to pay about 2, 000 USD of maral damage to judges of Kirau district court Chmara and Ulitsina and reimburse all judicial costs.

Sadouskaya’s children, disabled husband, and 85-year-old mother did not expect such a severe sentence. Sadouskaya learned that her mother had died from a telegram from her husband. Moreover, one year ago, also in April, Katsiaryna Sadouskaya had a surgery to treat cancer.

Sadouskaya’s husband Viktar Sadouski says: “They took a written undertaking from her that she would not insult anybody. She writes, the prison commission had a session, considered her case and recommended to release her on probation”.

There are cases in our penitentiary system, when prisoners were released on probation before serving half of their terms. For example, Mikola Astreika, leader of Partnership Civic Initiative, was sentenced to 2 year of imprisonment. He returned home in nine months, when his prison term was altered to a corrective labor sentence.
