Dzianis Dzianisau Set Free on Bail
Today the youth activist Dzianis Dzianisau was bailed out from the investigative isolator till trial. ‘It was a pleasant surprise for me’, he said to Human Rights Center Viasna.
The activist was met by friends and relatives. He informed them that he fell ill in the isolator and therefore needed some time to recover. Dzianisau also thanked to all those who made financial contributions for the bail, which is about 3,5 thousand US dollars. This money was given to the authorities on the activist’s birthday, 9 April, but as a result of bureaucratic protractions he was released two days later.
Dzianis Dzianisau is charged with violation of article 342 of the Criminal Code, ‘organizing the activist that grossly violate the public order and counteract to the authorities’. He was detained on 18 June 2006 in Vitsebsk, when a group of youth activists from the unregistered organization Bunt tried to hold an oppositional action. The activists hanged out a white-red-white flag over the summer amphitheater which was to be used for the official pops concert Slavonic bazaar.
The criminal case against Dzianisau was brought later, in October 2006. He was detained in a train to Homel on 16 February 2007. At first he was kept in Homel isolator and then was transferred to Vitsebsk.
