European MPs Condemn Arrests of Siuchyk and Viachorka
On behalf of the Delegation of the European Parliament on relations with Belarus its chair Bogdan Klikh signed a statement to protest against the arrest of an oppositional politician Viachaslau Siuchyk and the chair of the Belarusian People’s Front Vintsuk Viachorka. ‘I am concerned with the fact that such events take place on the eve of celebration of an anniversary of declaration of the Belarusian People’s Republic, and that the deterioration of the situation of democracy in Belarus does not match the latest statements of the Belarusian authorities and makes it impossible to improve the relations between the EU and Belarus,’ is said in the statement.
Bogdan Klikh stresses that liberation of political prisoners is one of the basic conditions for restoration of relations between Minsk and Brussels within the frames of the policy of the European neighborhood. ‘That’s why it depends on Mr. Lukashenka’s government whether to make concrete steps and finally choose a democratic way or remain the last dictatorship on the continent’, runs the statement.
