Trial over Kanstantsin Lukashou Appointed on 15 February
On 19 December the police detained a research worker of the Belarusian Academy of Sciences Kanstantsin Lukashou on accusation in evasion from interrogations concerning a criminal case that had been brought against him for ‘resistance to the police on 29 March 2006’. That day Mr. Lukashou took away from the hospital his brother Viachaslau Siuchyk, who was kept there after the beating he received as a result of abduction from the tent camp that was organized by protesters against the rigged presidential election. Unknown persons in plain clothes wanted to again seize Mr. Siuchyk on 29 March, but thanks to his brother’s aid Siuchyk managed to escape.
Since his detention Mr. Lukashou has been kept in an investigative isolator. Belarusian human rights activists and representatives of civil society consider the actions of the law machinery against Kanstantsin Lukashou politically motivated and illegal even formally. We should remind that the official charges to Lukashou were given on the 15th day of detention, whereas the law provides only 10 days for that.
