Editorial Board of Vitsebski Kuryier again Has to Leave Its Office

The editorial staff of the non-state regional newspaper Vitsebski Kurier has been asked to leave its office till 12. p.m. on 8 December. For the editorial office it is already the second eviction during the last three months.

A Vitsebsk enterprise Elsan has cancelled their contract before the term of lease is over.

’The contract is cancelled because of the law violation that took place when the contract was signed by Elsan and the closed company Vitsebski Kuryier Publishing House, namely because the Vitsebsk Pershamaiski borough executive committee did not give permission for it,’ is said in the letter signed by the head of the enterprise V.Dzmitrychenka. The editorial staff received it on 6 December.

’It turned out that the sudden change in the director’s attitude was caused by the pressure of the local authorities. The edition had to rent an Elsan office after a year’s rent of an office on the territory of the Vitsebsk taxi station. The head of the taxi station said he liked to read Vitsebski kuryier but he also had a boss who subdues to Vitsebsk city executive committee and that is why they had to “ask” the editorial staff to leave,’ – said Uladzimir Bazan, the editor-in-chief of Vitsebski kuryier, in an interview with the BAJ Monitoring Service.

By the way, according to the regulations no permission of local authorities is necessary when a lease contract is signed.
