Mahiliou Oppositionists Sue Police

The consideration of the suit of the activists of the independent trade union of radio-electronic trade Iryna Kacharova, Aliaksandr Silkou and Siarhei Straltsou has started in Mahiliou. The plaintiffs accuse the police in abuse of their powers during the celebration of the Independence Day on 27 July.

According to the plaintiffs, the police violated their rights by detaining them for several hours. On 27 July the plaintiffs went along the central street of Mahiliou, handed out fly-sheets and flew to sky white and red air balloons. Policemen in mufti watched them and then detained.

The judge Valiantsina Tarasava stated she will consider the suit and questioned the plaintiffs. After this the trial was postponed to 15 November. The initiators of the trial hope their demands will be satisfied. According to the legal adviser of the independent trade union Aliaksandr Karaliou, the most important thing is to make the police realize that their illegal actions can bring on consequences.
