On September 25 former MP, member of “Respublika” parliamentary group Siarhei Skrabets, serving a sentence in the minimum security prison announced a hunger strike. He claims, he went on hunger strike because he hadn’t been nominated for release on parole. S. Skrabets has also lodged a complaint to the penal jurisdiction department of the Interior Ministry of Belarus.

The prison administration explains, S. Skrabets really has a right for a parole discharge. The head of the prison says, Skrabets will be recommended for a parole in the beginning of October this year. The final decision on the case will be made by the court.

Skrabets’ wife told RFE/RL she knew nothing about the hunger strike. The last letter she received from her husband was dated September 25.

Siarhei Skrabets was sentenced to 2.5 years of jail for alleged loan fraud on February 14, 2006.
