UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in his message on the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, June 26, 2006, while reaffirming the inalienable rights and dignity of all men and women, called on everybody to combat cruel, degrading and inhuman treatment, wherever it may occur.
The International Day in Support of Victims of Torture was first observed on 26 June 1998. This date, 26 June, was chosen because on 26 June 1987, the UN Convention Against Torture came into force - and on 26 June 1948 the United Nations Charter was signed.
This is a day on which we pay our respects to those who have endured the unimaginable. This is an occasion for the world to speak up against the unspeakable. It is long overdue that a day be dedicated to remembering and supporting the many victims and survivors of torture around the world. – said Kofi Annan.
Belarus is one of the countries which keeps using torture and humiliation.
The UN have more than once pointed to the fact that capital punishment is still executed in Belarus.
