A new protest against Russian troops stay in Belarus was held on June 17, on the day of opening joint military exercises. A 15-metre streamer with the slogan No to Russian military in Belarus! was placed on the railroad bridge over Pushkin Avenue in Minsk. The streamer stayed there for more than an hour, and thousands of citizens saw it.
From June 17 to 25 large-scale joint military exercises Union Shield-2006 are held at the territory of Belarus. The exercise involves a total of 8,800 servicemen, 40 tanks, 180 armoured infantry carriers, 140 anti-tank guided missiles and 30 multiple launch rocket systems. 7,000 servicemen are provided by Belarus.
