Mahiliou Zubr Declares Action of Solidarity with Resistance Activist Iauhen Suvorau

Since 14 February the youth activist Iauhen Suvorau has been kept behind bolt and bar because of the criminal case that was brought upon article 435 part 1 of the Criminal Code (evasion from the measures connected with the military service). Activist of Mahiliou Zubr branch are sure it is a pretext for his imprisonment. It is confirmed with the fact that the medical commission confessed that he was unfit for military service in peaceful time because of bad eyesight. Besides, he has never hidden from the authorities and has always come to the military committee when summonsed. He has been often detained by the police for participation in street actions and distribution of printed materials, but they didn’t have such pretensions either.

On 14 February 2006 in Minsk the police detained him for hanging a large banner with the urge to take part in the Solidarity Day that is held on the 16th day each month in Belarus and abroad. He was accused of violation of article 156 (hooliganism). However, it was only a pretext for his detention - the administrative report for the violation wasn’t submitted to the court. At present Mr Suvorau is kept at the temporary isolator of Mahiliou. You can support him and express your solidarity by writing a letter to him.
