Homiel Authorities Persecute Independent Press
On 28 October Iauhien Pabalaviets, press-secretary of Homiel City Executive Committee, refused to provide the correspondent of BelaPAN agency Aliena Paskannaia with information about the schedule of the visit of the minister of foreign affairs to Homiel region. He stated the journalist was deprived of the accreditation that gave the possibility to work as a correspondent of information agency.
The correspondent, in her turn, asked him to give her the official document with explanation of the reasons for the refusal. In some time the press-secretary phoned to her and said she would be admitted to some measures, whereas some other ones would be closed for her.
-- I am afraid any information would become inaccessible to me in the things will be getting this way, said Aliena Paskannaia to a representative of the monitoring service of Belarusian Association of Journalists.
According to BAJ information, this situation is a result of the dissatisfaction of the executive committee officials at reprinting of some Paskannaia’s articles by Narodnaia Volia non-state newspaper.
