Political situation in Belarus in the spotlight of the European nations

On 23-24 September in Vilnius there will be an international seminar that will discuss the situation in Belarus. The organizers of the seminar are the Parliamentary Assembly of NATO and Sojm of the Lithuanian Republic.
The head of the delegation of the Lithuanian Sojm in the Parliamentary Assembly of NATO Iozas Olekas told Radio Liberty that this seminar is being arranged in Lithuania because the Lithuanian delegation is active in the PA NATO and the Lithuanian deputies proposed their assistance as close neighbors to Belarus.
The seminar will be attended by the parliamentarians from the NATO member-states, representatives of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly, UN, other international organizations, as well as political scientists from Lithuania, Poland, Belarus, representatives of the Lithuanian Governmental Institutions.
Representatives of the Belarusian non-governmental organizations and political parties – UCP Chair Anatol Liabedzka, BPF Party Chair Vintsuk Viachorka, the Chair of the Freedom and Progress Party Uladzimier Navasiad and also representatives of the youth movement Zubr, the civil initiative Freedom to Political Prisoners, Belarusian Association of Journalists, the Belarusian Women's League.
Adrian Severin, the special UN rapporteur for human rights in Belarus, also came to Vilnius to attend the seminar. Prior to his visit to Vilnius, Mr. Severin has been to Latvia and Estonia – this tour of the Baltic states was wholly devoted to the collection of information about the human rights situation in Belarus. The report by Adrian Severin "UN and Belarus" will be produced at the end of the seminar before the final discussion.
The international seminar will last for two days. Today there will be two sessions devoted to the Belarusian problems: the participants will discuss the situation in the country and democratic prospects. On Saturday there will the closing session – the participants will discuss the international aspect of the Belarusian issue and also the relations of Belarus with the international structures.
