Conflict in Journalism Department Goes on
According to RFE/RL
Students ask the rector of Belarusian State University and the education minister to re-examine the dean of the journalism department. On 8 June Aliena Andreieva and Hanna Kavaliova, students of the extra-mural part of the journalism department of Belarusian State University passed to the BSU rector Vasil Strazhau and the education minister Aliaksandr Radzkou their complaint against actions of the dean Siarhiei Dubovik. A week ago he refused to examine the students because they were “morally unprepared”. The students are sure it was his revenge for the campaign on collecting signatures for rehabilitation of their year-mate, journalist of Narodnaia Volia newspaper Volha Klaskouskaia.
In their appeal the students write that the actions of Siarhiei Dubovik are lawless, they violate the rights of students and present danger to their education. Both signers think that their public activity must be a reason for discrimination from the side of the department administration. They also ask the officials to check all the facts and take the appropriate measures to defend their right to education.
Aliona Andreieva already had several talks with the dean and deputy deans. She is convinced that the administration of the journalism department is very eager to get read of “activists”:
-- They said that I bring only politics to the department – yesterday I was in T-shirt with the inscription “Ukraine” and today I wear a T-shirt with Marynich’s portrait and added that I libeled the department and can be remanded for it, because libel is not welcome there.
Aliona Andreiva was the initiator of collecting of signatures for rehabilitation of Volha Klaskouskaia at the journalist department. Thirteen students singed the petition, but six of them revoked their signatures after they were summoned to the dean’s office. One can only guess what the dean said to the students.
