"Belarus is the last nest of repressions in Europe", said Kevin Maley, the US representative in the UN Committee for Human Rights. He made this statement at a briefing during the 61st session of the UN Committee.
This is the information provided by Radio Liberty.
When asked about the possibility of getting renewed mandate of UN rapporteur for Human Rights in Belarus, Kevin Maley said: "We openly support the right of the Belarusian people to live the way their European neighbors do, and call upon all delegations to vote in favor of the Belarus resolution".
Mr. Maley also said that it would be harder to get the resolution supported "due to the position of Russia to a great extent".
Joel Daniels, the US delegation representative, said that US diplomats together with their counterparts from EU countries will attempt to get renewal for the mandate of the UN Rapporteur for Human Rights in Belarus.
The UN Committee for Human Rights will hear the Belarus issue on 6 April.
