June 15, the 13th day of the hunger strike, the state-owned mass media again gave no information about it.
In the beginning there was some coverage of the hunger strike started by the MPs, but then official mass media fell silent. Viktar Ivashkevich, a BPF activist on hunger strike comments: “the authorities saw how people react to the hunger strike, and decided it was safer to fall silent. They will probably try to slur over the very existence of the opposition, of Respublika group, they will conceal any information about the activities of the opposition. The authorities are preparing for a massive attack in September, just on the eve of the election. This will be a series of 8-10 films of Goebbels-type propaganda against the democratic opposition. The authorities fell silent for a while, but in September the official mass media will take the full-scale offensive against the opposition”.
The Belarusian TV camera crew comes to the meeting of the citizens with the hunger strikers every day at 6 p.m. They film the scene every day, reporters ask questions, but they never broadcast the information.
The Belarusian TV administration told RFE/RL the camera crew is from “In the Center of Attention” show. However, deputy CEO of BTV news department Ludmila Kavalova refused to say how they were going to use the video materials.
