The Human Rights Center “Viasna”

On March 4 Leninski borough court again heard the case of Uladzimir Labkovich, lawyer of the liquidated Human Rights Center "Viasna". Judge Alena Tserashkova fined him 10 basic values (about 90 USD).
Uladzimir Labkovich was charged under Art 166 of the Code of Administrative Violations (failure to obey the legal demands of police officers). On October 28, 2003 Labkovich participated in a peaceful action of protest against closure of the Human Rights Center "Viasna". Next day during the trial the judge violated his right to speak Belarusian language in court. Labkovich appealed against the court verdict to a higher court, which reversed the court decision and sent the case back for a new hearing. During the second trial Viasna lawyer was provided with an interpreter.
